Machine learning (ML) is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) that allows machines to learn from data and past experiences. The first step when looking for a computer is to understand the possible system requirements for your chosen project. Each project will vary on its needs of processor type, graphic card and the minimum amount of RAM. Typically, you want to ensure your specifications are significantly above the minimum requirements to ensure your computer runs effectively. Large machine learning models in their current state today are heavily reliant on graphics cards due to the fact that graphics cards far outperform CPUs in the amount of computations which can be done simultaneously due to the core count. Depending on the data your machine learning models will be trained on, it may not be necessary to utilize a graphics card, however we would recommend going with a dedicated graphics card for most machine learning models. For those case scenarios, depending on how intensive the data may be, you may want to go with a graphics card in the mid-range level or high-range level. Projects which have large datasets often may require the use of multiple graphics cards on the same computer. On top of running your other software, machine learning itself may also utilize a lot of RAM depending on the complexity of your projects. We recommend at least 16GB of RAM just to be on the safe side as the latest operating systems are also becoming more and more RAM intensive. However, larger datasets become complex projects so you may need 32GB or more of RAM especially if you’re using multiple applications simultaneously. Machine learning usually utilizes multi-core processes depending on the complexity of the project. Therefore, your CPU choice should weigh both on the CPU Clock speed and the core count depending your project’s needs. We only recommend a Solid-State Drive for your operating system and programs instead of a traditional mechanical hard-drive. You can use a mechanical hard-drive as a secondary drive for storing your data if you wish.
